The concept for Boorna Waanginy began in early 2015 after Nigel Jamieson (Boorna Waanginy Director) and Wendy Martin (Perth Festival Artistic Director 2016 - 2019) went on a walk around Kings Park guided by Dr Richard Walley, Walley highlighting the Six Seasons and the Noongar relationship with plant species in the park.

"Boorna Waanginy is about nature speaking to us, from a long process of evolution," says Walley, who worked with teams of video and acoustic designers and director Nigel Jamieson on Boorna Waanginy's first iteration for the 2017 Perth Festival and this EverNow revival. He is unapologetic about the more urgent tone injected into the latest.

The event will run from October 4-9 and include three key elements - Song Circle, Fire Gardens and Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak, and will be delivered by the Perth Festival Special Projects team. Some of you may remember Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak, which attracted over 300,000 attendees after opening Perth Festival in 2017 and 2019.

This is one of the many questions posed by Boorna Waanginy ("The Trees Speak" in Noongar), the opening event of this year's Perth International Arts Festival. Perth Festival announces its 2019 program

The next day, we were brought to the iconic Kings Park and Botanic Garden — one of the must-visit places in Perth. Here, the Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak took place — a multi-sensorial display of sound and light amid the trees and landscape of the park. It was as though the park was made for the theatrics of this installation.
